Yamaha is reportedly preparing to expand its popular R-series lineup in India with the launch of the all-new Yamaha YZF-R2. According to recent reports, the Yamaha R2 India launch is expected to take place on August 27, 2026. While Yamaha has not officially confirmed the motorcycle’s name or specifications, a media invitation for the date strongly suggests that an important new model is coming.
The upcoming Yamaha R2 is expected to sit above the Yamaha R15 and offer Indian riders more performance without entering the expensive multi-cylinder sports bike category. Reports also suggest that it will be developed and manufactured in India, making it an important product for Yamaha’s domestic and international markets.
Yamaha R2 Expected Engine and Performance
The Yamaha R2 is likely to be powered by a new single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with a displacement of around 200cc to 220cc. Official power figures have not been revealed, but the motorcycle could produce approximately 25hp and around 20Nm of torque.
For comparison, the Yamaha R15 uses a 155cc, liquid-cooled engine that produces 18.4hp and 14.2Nm. The larger engine should give the R2 stronger acceleration, improved highway performance and a higher overall performance level while maintaining reasonable fuel efficiency.
The Yamaha R2 may compete directly with sports bikes such as the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR. Yamaha could also focus on keeping the motorcycle lightweight, which may help it deliver an impressive power-to-weight ratio and agile handling.

Yamaha R2 Design and Features

The motorcycle could retain some of the compact and lightweight characteristics that have made the R15 popular among young riders. However, the riding position, chassis, suspension and braking system may be revised to handle the additional performance.
Expected features include a TFT instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity, dual-channel ABS, traction control and a quickshifter. Reports also suggest that higher variants could receive ride-by-wire technology, riding modes and a bi-directional quickshifter. Cruise control and selectable ABS modes have also been mentioned, although these features remain unconfirmed.
Yamaha R2 Expected Price in India
The Yamaha R2 price in India is expected to start between Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 2.20 lakh, ex-showroom. A better-equipped variant could be priced closer to Rs. 2.30 lakh.
At this price, the R2 would be positioned above the R15 and close to the KTM RC 200. Yamaha is expected to continue selling the R15 alongside the new model, giving buyers a choice between an accessible 155cc sports bike and a more powerful 200cc-class motorcycle.

Made in India for Global Markets
One of the most significant details about the Yamaha R2 is that it is expected to be designed, developed and manufactured in India. Production will reportedly take place at Yamaha’s Chennai facility, with the motorcycle being exported to several international markets.
