Yamaha has officially launched the much-awaited YZF-R2 in India, with prices starting at Rs 2.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Making its global debut in India, the new supersport sits above the popular R15 V4 and marks Yamaha’s entry into the 200cc sportbike category. The R2 is offered in three variants and five colour options, with deliveries scheduled to begin from mid-September 2026 through Yamaha Blue Square dealerships.
With a new 204cc engine, aggressive R-series styling and features such as riding modes, traction control and a TFT display, the YZF-R2 aims to offer a significant step up for riders upgrading from smaller sport bikes.

New 204cc Engine
At the heart of the Yamaha R2 is an all-new 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. Yamaha’s new motor produces around 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm of peak torque, making the R2 noticeably more powerful than the R15. It is paired with a six-speed gearbox, while a slip-and-assist clutch comes as standard. The mid-spec and R2M variants also receive a bi-directional quickshifter.
With a kerb weight of just 149 kg, the R2 promises an impressive power-to-weight ratio and should retain the lightweight, agile character for which Yamaha’s smaller R-series motorcycles are known.
Features and Technology
Yamaha has equipped the R2 with considerably more technology than a typical entry-level sport bike. A TFT instrument console with smartphone connectivity comes as part of the package, while traction control is standard across the range. Riders also get Street, Sport and Rain riding modes, allowing the motorcycle’s behaviour to be adapted to different riding conditions.
The flagship R2M further distinguishes itself with a Smart Key System for keyless ignition. It also receives adjustable front and rear suspension along with adjustable clutch and brake levers.
