The Yamaha R15 V4 has long been one of India’s most popular entry-level sports bikes, combining sharp handling, aggressive styling and impressive performance from its 155cc engine. Now, Yamaha has introduced a natural step up with the new Yamaha YZF-R2, launched in India at Rs 2.30 lakh.

With a bigger 204cc engine, significantly more power, riding modes and premium electronics, the R2 looks tempting for existing R15 owners. But is the Yamaha R2 really worth upgrading to from the R15 V4?

The new R2 gets an entirely new 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder DOHC engine producing 26.5hp at 10,000rpm and 19.1Nm at 8,000rpm. Unlike the R15, it doesn’t use VVA. Instead, Yamaha has developed a new cylinder head and uses DLC-coated valve components to reduce friction.

That represents a substantial jump in performance. The R2 has roughly 44% more peak power and 35% more torque than the R15 V4 while weighing only around 8kg more.

For highway riding and overtaking, that additional performance should be immediately noticeable.

Features: R2 Takes Things Further

The R15 V4 is already one of the most feature-rich motorcycles in its class. Depending on the variant, equipment includes traction control, dual-channel ABS, smartphone connectivity, Street and Track display modes, USD front forks and an upshift quickshifter.

The R2 moves things forward with a 5-inch colour TFT display, ride-by-wire throttle, traction control and three riding modes – Street, Sport and Rain. An assist and slipper clutch and dual-channel ABS are standard.

The Rs 2.39 lakh R2 adds a bi-directional quickshifter, allowing clutchless upshifts and downshifts.

The flagship R2M, priced at Rs 2.53 lakh, further adds adjustable suspension, adjustable clutch and brake levers, premium finishes and a keyless system.

The R15 V4 remains the lighter motorcycle at 141kg, while the base R2 weighs 149kg. Both motorcycles use 37mm USD front forks and linked-type rear monoshock suspension.

However, the R2 doesn’t simply use a modified R15 chassis. Yamaha has developed a new high-tensile steel diamond frame weighing just 14kg, with geometry influenced by the larger YZF-R6.

The R15’s lighter weight should continue to make it exceptionally easy to handle, particularly for beginners. The R2, however, offers substantially more performance without becoming dramatically heavier.

However, upgrading isn’t essential for everyone.

If most of your riding involves commuting around the city, the R15 V4 remains lighter, more affordable and likely cheaper to run. Its 155cc VVA engine already provides plenty of performance for everyday riding.
